FISHING REPORTS - October 2016

Superlative Fishing Continues in Southwest Florida!

Oh what a summer it has been! We were blessed with a very strong Tarpon season that yielded personal best numbers in both hookups and releases. With Tarpon season wrapping up in July, we switched over to big snook fishing in the passes and beaches of Boca Grande, Captiva, and Little Gasparilla Island. Most of these snook are large females measuring between 30 and 45 inches. Some trips resulted in as many as 15 fish over 35 inches. Penn Spinfisher V 6500 Spinning Reels spooled with 50lb Spiderwire Glow-Vis Braid was our go to setup to land these linesiders.

There is also an unusually large amount of Tarpon that have stuck around in Charlotte Harbor and Boca Grande. During the second week of August we had a trip with 29 Tarpon jumped and 6 released before 10:00 am. These fish should be roaming our waters through late October if the cold fronts stay away. The September fall redfish run is underway. Our redfish are gathered in large schools in preparation for their annual spawn. The bite will continue to be hot throughout the fall season.

Grouper season is open and should pick up dramatically over the next month. Slightly cooler water moves these fish into the bay and makes them more aggressive on our baits and lures. All of our grouper fishing is done in 4-18 feet of water in Pine Island Sound. The limit is 2 per angler and the season closes at the end of December.

In other news, our 21' Intruder Cat Hull got a makeover last month. Chris Wolchok with Coast II Coast marine in Palm Harbor did an excellent job in making her come back to life. The boat looks brand new and is ready to take you fishing.

We have been very busy on the tournament scene as well. We've won numerous tournaments over the last few years, but winning the 2016 Cracker Invitational out of Tween Waters Resort on Captiva takes the cake. Capt. Dave guided his clients to an impressive win against one of the most loaded tournament fields in this area. This is arguably the most prestigious fishing tournament in the area and dates back to the early 1980's. We also won the Snook Calcutta in the Flats Invitational the previous weekend. We are for hire for many tournaments here in Southwest Florida. Contact us for more details.

I have one full day and four half day charters still available in October. If you are looking for a date next month you better call soon. I look forward to hearing from you and fishing with you in the near future!

Tight Lines,
Capt. Dave Hoke

Captain's Fishing Report Archives

Capt. Dave, Thanks for a wonderful two days of fishing. It's not often you set out on a plan and it is basically executed to perfection (big reds, snapper, short groupers, trophy snook, and 100-300 lb Goliaths) in the world of fishing. I'm already trying to work on two of my buddies to come down there with me and maybe a have a repeat performance. I'll let you know if I can get them to commit.."

"Captain Dave! Wow, that is the only word that sums up our fishing trip last week. 30 redfish over 30" and 2 35" Snook. I am spoiled, For LIFE! "

Bob R

"Captain Dave.Total was 20-25 snook (we lost count) with almost all over 30", largest was the one below, 42". Plus 7 reds from 29"-33" and a nice 22" gag kicker. It is hard to keep two kids focused on fishing for 4 hours but its much easier when your baits are getting hammered on almost every cast. We have a ton more photos on the camera but need to upload them. I will post one or two that are on my phone. Thanks again Captain Dave.

"Dave, I just wanted to take this time to send you a note thanking you for such an awesome experience. I have fished with guides all over the world and I have never seen anyone take control on the water like you do. Your passion for your job and wealth of knowledge is truly amazing and I can't wait for many trips in the future. "

"Hi Captain Dave,

Hope all is well. I hope you can remember us I was the older guy the handled off the fishing rod in your words like you had never seen so fast. My youngest son I'm hoping is coming down in the next month or 2 and I will see if you have any open time, We had a true blast fishing with you! "

Capt. Dave, Jackson and Dodd can't stop talking about that giant Bull Shark they caught. I am sure we will be giving you another call if we make it back for spring break. Either way, I will refer you to anyone I know that is visiting the area. ."
